Picture of Brian Statham, see what the Heybridge Swifts FC manager has to say... Neil Bateman talks to Wayne Bond - Reserve Team Manager (Not Pictured)

For the uninitiated could you give us a bit of detail about your background in football and at the club?

My background is Wimbledon FC for 2 Years, followed by 2 Years in Germany Playing for Hessen Kassel, came home and played games for Colchester United and Wycombe Wanderers but ended up playing for Stanway Rovers for around 10 Years. Then Managed them for a couple of years before being asked to take over the Ressie Job and Heybridge.

How do you see your role at the club?

My role is very basic, to provide Players for the 1st Team and to make sure they are taught to play football in the right way. But i also think that because some of the players are so young we also help them to develope from Boys to Men.

How much contact do you have with the first team management?

Contact with the 1st Team Managment is 1st class as I have said before Managers from other Clubs I speak to talk of a the Reserve Team being treated as a seperate club but I can honestly say the contact with the Management is better than anyone can imagine.

How important do you feel local players are to the club?

Local players are important to a club like Heybridge Swifts, i think the supporters like to see the young local lads,it also shows the supporters that the structure of the club is in a healthy position, look at this Season,Hull,Clarke, Rowe,Bowyerx2,Brotherton are all Heybridge lads and then you have Passfield,Ewing,King all from Who??? and Billericay which the supporters like to see. Mind you the players need to be good enough to be involved.

What do you see as more important in a player, skill and ability, or attitude?

A players need to show qualities in all areas as you need something to work on but I think the important thing for a young player at Heybridge Swifts is to show that he wants to play football in the right way, this is something Keith and I work on all the time. Also a player needs to show ambition to play at the highest possible level he can.

Any things you feel that the ressies might have done better this season?

As the lads will tell you I’m a bit of a git in the changing rooms as I feel that we can always improve, One thing I do think we could have done better is killing teams off quicker and taking our chances as early as possible to put a game to bed.But other than that Winning a League conceeding so few goals and scoring so many as we have done I dont really see what we could have done better apart from doing a clean sweep which would have been very difficult.

What do you think is the biggest achievement for your team this year? The biggest achievment we have made this year is providing so many players for the 1st team but still producing good football at the same time and winning in the right manor.I can’t speak highly enough of all the players who have always given 100% even when it would have been easy to get complacent against the lesser teams in the league. The Squad has done everything we have asked them to do and caused many selection headaches.

Any tips for the top coming through at the club?

We do have some excellent young lads coming through but if you are asking about New Young Players then I would have to say that Reece Morgan and Adam Rushen would be players to keep an eye on. Reece is a very good Midfield player who I dont think realises just how much potential he has and Adam has made an amazing Jump from Under 16’s to 1st Team Squad in a matter of weeks which is a testament to the 16 and 18 Management Teams.Obviously we have all the lads who have at some time been involved with the 1st Team this Year but for New Lads coming through I would have to plump for those 2
