| What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is the tool used in clinical hypnotherapy to aid relaxation and to help focus the mind towards it's objective. It is a natural state of consciousness in which we find ourselves several times a day. For example, when we become completely engrossed in a very absorbing story or film (or even just daydreaming) or the mundane journey to work, we may not be fully aware of our surroundings but since we are not sleeping, we have the resources to become alert and react to a situation if needed.
It is much the same level of focus that we can achieve with hypnosis, using the calming voice of the therapist, and this can be a wonderfully relaxing time of escapism for some people. There can be an element of time distortion where an hour can seem like just a few minutes, but you remain aware and in control of your thoughts and actions at all times.
Because you become relaxed enough to let go of troubling thoughts at a conscious level, the logical, analytical mind can slow down, allowing more effective communication with the subconscious mind.
How can Hypnotherapy help?
The subconscious mind deals with emotion and instinct, rather than logic. It is the place where memories and beliefs are stored, some memories of which may be forgotten or repressed in childhood. Likewise, some long-held beliefs may now be in conflict with newer concepts that you may have taken on board as an adult. Careful use of relevant, positive suggestions can rapidly help to undo the harm caused by these influences.
Regression/Analysis Therapy Explained
Another use of hypnosis in therapy is for regressing to an earlier time in your past to re-evaluate negative experiences. Without the distortion of time, the adult you can gain a better understanding of the situation and draw on adult resources that had not been available to you as a child. By doing this, it helps you to perceive the event in a more neutral, relaxed way. This can rapidly promote a healthier viewpoint and you can often let go of the past, feeling that a huge weight has been lifted.
You may wish to resolve former issues but be concerned about discussing or 'reliving' the unpleasant event. This is a common worry, although there are plenty of ways around the problem when using some forms of analysis. This often has the bonus effect of clearing up a lot of other 'lesser' problems at the same time, leaving you feeling like a 'new person'.
